Heroes in the Skies

The Tuskegee Airmen trained in the U.S. Army during World War II. They were known for their bravery and skill.

At this time, people who served in the U.S. Army were separated by race. So, a new training program was created only for African Americans. The first pilots to complete the training became the first African American pilots in the U.S. Army.

Many African Americans trained for other important jobs, too. Some trained as navigators. They would guide the planes. Others trained as mechanics. They would fix the planes.
