Across the United States, people are struggling over the issue of voting. Some states are passing laws that would make voting easier. Some people worry that making voting easier will make it easier to cheat in elections. Representatives in some states are passing laws to make voting more secure. Critics of these laws say they make voting too hard. In American history, laws have made it hard or impossible for groups such as African Americans to vote. People worry these new laws will again take away some people’s right to vote.
After the 2020 election, some people claimed there was fraud. That means they think that people voted in ways that were against the law. Many courts reviewed claims of fraud. They found no evidence of widespread fraud. Some states are still changing their laws. They say they want people to be sure their elections are fair.
One way states are trying to make voting more secure is to make it harder to sign up to vote. But if it’s harder to sign up, then some people won’t vote. Some new laws are also limiting the places people can vote. It will mean some people live too far away from their voting place. They may not be able to get there to vote.
Other people claimed that voting was too hard in 2020. They wanted to make voting easy for all citizens. Some states have ballots they can mail in. Some states are making it easier to get mail-in ballots. A new law in Kentucky makes it easier to get a ballot. Some states think that mail-in ballots can be faked. So, they are limiting mail-in ballots.
Some companies don’t like the laws that are making it harder to vote. They have spoken out against them. Major League Baseball, for example, changed the location of their All-Star game because of strict laws in Georgia.
What Do You Think? Do you think it should be easy to vote? Why or why not?
