Do you know where you’d find Japan, South Korea, China, Vietnam, or the Philippines on a map? If you said Asia, you’d be right! From November 3-14, President Trump will spend time in all those countries.
The president will meet with leaders of each country he visits. They will talk about ways to keep our countries safe and happy. This will build more trust between our nations.
After going to Japan, South Korea, and China, the president will join two big meetings in Asia. First, he will attend the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit [meeting] in the Philippines. There, Trump will have an important job. He will show the countries of ASEAN that the United States wants to keep working with them.
Then, he will go to the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Vietnam. APEC is a group of countries that lie on or near the Pacific Ocean. They meet each year to strengthen friendships with one another. They plan ways to be an even better team.
North Korea, another Southeastern Asian country, has been in the news lately. They have been testing weapons. The United States wants to be sure that North Korea doesn’t hurt anyone. Americans hope that a plan can be made during this trip to keep everyone safe.
What About You? Why do you think it’s important for world leaders to meet?
