National First Ladies Day

The last Saturday in April is National First Ladies Day. We celebrate all the US first ladies.

The First Lady supports and works with the president. The first lady is usually the president’s wife. Let’s find out about three women who have served as first lady.

At just 21 years old, Francis Cleveland was the youngest ever first lady. She married President Grover Cleveland in 1886. The wedding was in the White House.

In 1893, Francis Cleveland gave birth to her daughter, Esther. This is the only time a baby has been born in the White House.

Francis Cleveland supported women’s education. She helped to build free kindergarten classes.
