What Is Blue Light?

Some types of glasses block blue light from your eyes.

Do your eyes hurt after looking at screens for a long time?  Some eyeglasses claim to protect our eyes from light coming from screens. Are these glasses necessary?

Blue light is one of the colors of visible light. Over time, natural blue light from the Sun can damage your eyes. Many of the devices we use also give off blue light. These include tablets, TVs, and phones. But the amount of blue light from devices is much less than the amount in natural sunlight. Blue light from devices has not been shown to damage the eye.

So why do screens make your eyes hurt? When you look at a screen, you blink less often. This dries your eyes and results in eye strain. But don’t worry! This is not harmful. Eye doctors use a “20-20-20” rule. Every 20 minutes, take a break from the screen. Look at something 20 feet or more away for 20 seconds or more.

Light from screens can also affect your sleep. During the day, natural light keeps us awake. Looking at screens before going to bed can make it hard to fall asleep. Limit screen time in the hours before bedtime.

What Do You Think?    Is the light from screens dangerous? Why or why not?
