The United States Mint makes coins. The Mint recently announced a new four-year program. It will honor women who did important things in the United States. Their images will appear on quarters starting in January, 2022.
The women on the coins will come from areas such as civil rights, the government, the arts, science, and space. They will be of different ethnic and racial backgrounds. None of the coins will show living women. American people can nominate the women to be honored on the coins.
Maya Angelou and Sally Ride will be the first women on the coins. Maya Angelou was an African American poet and playwright. She also worked as a civil rights activist with Malcolm X and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Sally Ride was a scientist who qualified to become an astronaut. She was the first American woman in space. She was a mission specialist on the Space Shuttle Challenger.
What Do You Think? What woman would you nominate to be on the special coins?
